Classic French Toast
Instructions
- Whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a shallow dish.
- Melt 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat. While it heats, dip bread slices in the custard for about 15 seconds per side — long enough to soak through.
- Cook 2-3 minutes per side until deeply golden. Add more butter as needed between batches.
- Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar, fresh berries, and warm maple syrup.
Notes
Day-old bread works best — slightly stale bread absorbs the custard without getting soggy. Brioche or challah make this truly exceptional. Regular sandwich bread works fine in a pinch.
